Family Updates

It's been a full summer so far - with a visit to Cranbrook for the kids and I, Craig Gordon's wedding in Stony Plain on August 1st, and four days at the Edmonton Folk Festival (see further down the page for details)!

Scott is still working nearby but it is likely he will soon be leaving for the wilds of either Edson, Suffield or Williams Lake. We'll let you know if he's going to be in YOUR neighborhood.

August 31 is the start of our school year. Haley is thrilled to begin kindergarten and Zach is going to be a Big Grade 2er!! We are starting a new school this year so the whole family is filled with excitement and a touch of anxiety!!

I am looking forward to seeing John Kennedy's new web page. As soon as he has it on the internet I will post the address here.

Pat, Kelley, John and Patrick are headed to BC this Friday. They will meet the rest of the family for the James Gordon Wedding at the end of August.

Edmonton Folk Festival (Aug 6-9)

Scott and I took the kids and headed to Gallagher Park for Thursday's opening night of the festival. We got there in time to hear the awesome Emmy-Lou Harris and gritty soul searching voice of Joan Osborne. In between these two musicians we enjoyed a few songs by Bill Bourne. Zach fell asleep shortly after we arrived. Haley, on the other hand danced and sang until 11 p.m. when it was time to leave.

Friday night we met Pat, Kelley and Dean (Kelley's brother) . The main stage acts: Roy Forbes, Chester Knight and the Wind, Muzsikas with Marta Sebestyen, Buckwheat Zyedco, Billy Bragg and Spirit of the West!! Toots and the Maytals were expected to participate in the night's events, but the band was detained by the Canadian High Commission in Jamaica and their appearance at the Edmonton Folk Fest was canceled. Buckwheat Zydeco had the crowd really moving with his hot cajun band. Billy Bragg was entertaining, but it was Spirit of the West that had 10,000 people dancing from top of the slopes to the main stage at the bottom.
The line-up for Saturday's main stage was: Martin Sexton, Lonesome River Band, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham, Capercaillie, Jay McShann & Duke Robillard & Maria Muldaur, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Ashley MacIsaac & the Kitchen Devils!!! This years kids area was most excellent. Zach and Haley spent hours building huge sand castles, making shakers and hats and watching performers - Norman Foote had the kids laughing at his rendition of Old MacDonald's Farm (as if performed by Johnny Cash, Spice Girls, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra...). When Ashley MacIsaac came on stage at the end of a long day (for us it started at 12 pm went until to 2 am) the crowd went crazy. His band played incredible bagpipes and fiddle tunes. Another day that was well worth the heat
Sunday brings: Balfa Toujours, Arlo Guthrie, Lhasa, Baaba Maal featuring Daande Lenol Band, and Jan Arden.
Overall, the weekend was just as we expected - EXCELLENT!!
